How to Apply Eye Makeup Like a Pro

The right technique and the right products make all the difference when it comes to eye makeup. Here is our guide to applying eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and eyebrows for a result that truly stands out.

Start With a Good Base

Always apply a primer or concealer to your eyelid before you start with eyeshadow. It gives the shadow something to grip, intensifies the pigment, and keeps your makeup in place considerably longer.

Eyeshadow

Good brushes are essential for a professional finish. You need at least three: a wide shader brush for applying shadow across the entire lid, a blending brush for softening edges and blending along the crease, and a flat brush for precision along the lash line.

Build up the look using four shades. Start with the lightest shade as a highlight in the inner corner and beneath the brow bone. Apply the mid-tone below the eyelid crease using the blending brush. Place the contour shade along the crease and blend it out thoroughly. Finish with the darkest shade in the outer corners for depth and definition.

Eyeliner

Draw a fine line as close to the lash line as possible to avoid gaps. Start thin and build up if you want more drama. Finding it hard to keep the line straight? Place small dots along the lash line and connect them — it makes it much easier to achieve an even line on both eyes.

Mascara

Always curl your lashes before applying mascara, never after. Apply with the wand held horizontally from the root and wiggle it upwards towards the tips for even distribution and maximum volume. Wipe any excess from the wand onto a tissue before applying to avoid clumping.

Want an extra layer for more drama? Wait until the first coat is dry before building on. Mascara adds length, volume, and definition in one step and is easy to build up layer by layer. For a more natural look, a lighter application works just as well.

Don't forget your lower lashes. Mascara on the lower lash line opens up the eyes and gives the whole eye area more presence.

Common Mascara Mistakes to Avoid

Never use mascara beyond three months of use. Old mascaras harbour bacteria that can cause infections and irritation, and the formula deteriorates — resulting in clumpy, dry lashes.

Never pump the wand in and out of the tube. It forces air in, which dries out the mascara faster and creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Instead, rotate the wand against the inside of the tube.

Always remove your mascara in the evening. Mascara left on overnight dries out your lashes, hinders growth, and increases the risk of premature lash loss. A dedicated waterproof makeup remover gently removes even the most stubborn formulas.

Want to give your lashes an extra boost? Xlash Eyelash Serum is applied every evening and gives visibly longer and fuller lashes in 28 days — making your mascara even more impactful.

Eyebrows

Finish the look with well-defined brows. Choose a shade one tone darker than your natural brow hair and fill in with light pencil strokes in the direction of hair growth. An ultra-fine tip gives a natural, precise result without looking overdone. For naturally fuller brows, serum treatments such as Xbrow Eyebrow Serum can give visibly thicker and more defined brows in 28 days.

The right technique and the right products take your eye makeup from good to great. Practise, experiment, and find what works for your eyes.
