Prom night is finally here and you want to look your absolute best all evening. Here are five simple tricks that make a big difference.
1. Use blotting paper instead of powder
After a few hours of dancing, your skin starts to look shiny — it happens to everyone regardless of skin type. Resist the temptation to reach for the powder, as it only builds up and creates a cakey, overdone finish. Blotting paper absorbs excess oil and mattifies your face without disturbing your makeup, keeping you looking naturally fresh all evening. No blotting paper at home? A coffee filter works brilliantly as a substitute.
2. Don't wash your hair on the day
Hair that was washed the day before — or even two days before — holds a style far better and doesn't fall as easily. Does it feel a little greasy? Use dry shampoo instead of washing it again. Avoid applying products straight after washing, as they weigh the hair down and make it harder to style.
3. Put your jewellery on last
Always put your jewellery on as the very last step, after body lotion, perfume, and the rest of your skincare. Perfume and oils can discolour silver and leave jewellery looking dull. Pearls are especially delicate and should be kept well away from perfume and chemicals.
4. Keep blister plasters in your bag
High heels look incredible but can turn the evening into an ordeal if you're not prepared. Put a plaster on as soon as you start to feel any rubbing — don't wait until it's really painful. It's also worth bringing a comfortable pair of shoes to change into once the most intense dancing is over. And practise walking in your heels beforehand for a smooth, confident stride all night.
5. The Vaseline trick for longer-lasting fragrance
Apply a thin layer of Vaseline to your wrists, behind your ears, and on the back of your neck before spritzing on your perfume. Moisturised skin holds a scent going much longer than dry skin. You can also try spraying a mist of perfume and walking through it for an even, subtle coverage. Store your perfume in the bedroom rather than the bathroom, as heat and humidity break down the scent more quickly. And never rub your wrists together after applying — it destroys the top notes.
