Understanding Your Eyelashes & the Lash Growth Cycle

Why do we have eyelashes?

Eyelashes protect your eyes from dust and fine particles, and act as a sensitivity sensor that reacts immediately when something gets too close. In other words, they are one of the body's most clever protective systems — not just a makeup tool.

The three phases of the growth cycle

The anagen phase is the growth phase and lasts four to six weeks. This is where the follicles are active and the lashes grow to their natural length. Around 40 per cent of the upper lashes are in this phase at any one time, which means you always have lashes that are actively growing.

The catagen phase is the transition phase, lasting two to three weeks. The lash has reached its maximum length and the follicle begins to shrink. Lashes that fall out during this phase must wait until the full cycle is complete before regrowth can occur.

The telogen phase is the resting phase and lasts up to 100 days. The follicle weakens and the lash rests until it falls away naturally. It then takes one to two months before a new anagen phase begins and a new lash starts to grow.

What affects lash growth?

Diet and hydration play a significant role. Keratin, found in lean meat and dairy products, is one of the most important proteins for lash strength. Iron and zinc from lentils and seeds encourage growth. Vitamin A improves quality and shine. And water — at least two litres a day — is the most important factor of all for healthy follicles.

Thyroid issues can affect the growth cycle and cause lashes to fall out more quickly or prevent them from reaching their full length. Skin inflammation, allergies to mascara, and eye infections can also inhibit growth.

Mascara habits have more of an impact than you might think. Waterproof mascara is difficult to remove, and abrasive cleansing can pull lashes out prematurely. Never sleep with mascara on — it prevents the lashes from re-hydrating and can bend them in the wrong direction, increasing the risk of breakage.

Support the cycle with the right products

Xlash Eyelash Serum is formulated with keratin, hyaluronic acid, and botanical extracts that work with the natural growth cycle to extend the anagen phase, strengthen follicles, and deliver visibly longer and fuller lashes in 28 days. Apply every evening along the lash line after cleansing.

Always remove mascara thoroughly with our Caring Eyes Make Up Remover to give your follicles the best possible conditions to work freely.

Look after your body, stay hydrated, and give your lashes the right nourishment — and the cycle will take care of the rest.
