Dry and chapped lips are a common problem and can be caused by everything from cold weather and sun exposure to wearing a mask for long periods of time. Here are six simple steps to get your lips back in top shape.
1. Choose the right mask
The material matters. Choose a cotton mask that does not sit too tightly against your mouth to reduce friction and moisture build-up that dries out your lips. Always wash reusable masks after each use to prevent bacteria from building up.
2. Use a good lip balm every day
Choose a lip balm with antioxidant properties that locks in moisture and soothes the skin. Ingredients such as petroleum jelly or natural beeswax work brilliantly for dry lips. Avoid menthol and mint flavours, which feel pleasant at first but are drying in the long run, as well as fruity flavours that encourage you to lick your lips.
3. Try natural remedies
Cucumber, aloe vera, and coconut oil are all effective natural options for dry and sore lips. Cucumber provides a cooling and moisturising effect, aloe vera soothes and heals inflamed skin, and coconut oil locks in moisture and reduces inflammation. Apply and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes for the best results.
4. Exfoliate gently
A lip scrub removes dead skin cells and improves circulation for naturally fuller and more vibrant lips. Do it after a warm shower when the skin is looser and warmer. Rub gently with a damp cotton cloth in circular motions and always follow up with a moisturising balm. Do not overdo it — once a week is enough.
5. Stay hydrated
Dry lips are often one of the first signs of dehydration. Aim for at least two litres of water a day and cut back on caffeine, which contributes to dehydration. Your body and your lips will thank you.
6. Look after your lips long term
Dry lips need consistent care to stay healthy. Build a simple routine with daily lip balm, regular exfoliation, and enough water — and you will notice the difference quickly. Do not forget to always protect your lips with SPF when you are out in the sun.
