Time to Sanitise Your Makeup Station

When did you last check the expiry date on your mascara? Or give your makeup brushes a proper clean? It's easy to forget — but old makeup products and dirty brushes can cause irritation, breakouts, and in the worst case, infections. Here's a quick guide to keeping your makeup kit clean and up to date.

Check the Expiry Dates

Most makeup products carry a PAO symbol — a small open jar with a number and the letter M — indicating how many months the product remains usable after opening. It's worth going through your entire kit regularly and disposing of anything that has passed its time.

Mascara should be replaced every three months. It deteriorates quickly and can harbour bacteria that transfer directly to your lashes and eyes. If you notice the consistency has changed or it smells unusual, throw it out straight away.

Liquid eyeliner should be treated like mascara and replaced regularly. Pencil eyeliner lasts longer, as sharpening removes bacteria from the tip.

Foundation separates in its bottle and changes in colour and texture once it has passed its date. Store it somewhere cool and shake it thoroughly before use to extend its shelf life.

Powder and blusher last up to 18 months, but they collect oils from your skin and brushes over time, eventually creating an impenetrable surface that can trigger breakouts.

Clean Your Brushes Regularly

Makeup brushes pick up dead skin cells, oils, and product residue with every use. If they're never washed, the bacteria can transfer directly to your skin and cause irritation and breakouts. Rinse them with water and a mild soap regularly, then leave them to dry lying flat so the bristles keep their shape. Well-cared-for brushes last for years and give a noticeably better makeup finish.

Don't Forget Tweezers and Your Eyelash Curler

Tweezers and eyelash curlers are part of the kit too. Clean them regularly, and replace them when they stop working as they should — when tweezers no longer grip properly or your eyelash curler has lost its cushioning pad, it's time for new ones.

Always Remove Your Makeup Properly

Always end the day with a thorough cleanse. Our Caring Eyes Make Up Remover gently removes all eye makeup without irritating the delicate skin around your eyes. Follow up with Xlash Eyelash Serum along the lash line to give your lashes the nourishment they need after a day of makeup wear.

A clean, well-organised makeup kit saves you money, protects your skin, and gives you better results.
