Which eyeliner is right for you?

There's an eyeliner for everyone — but finding the right one can take a little time. Here's a quick guide to the three most common types, so you know exactly what you're getting into.

Gel eyeliner

Gel eyeliner comes in a small pot and is applied with an angled brush. It gives great control and wears well once it's set. Warm the product up slightly on the back of your hand before applying for a creamier consistency and easier blending. The downside is that the pot needs to be sealed properly — otherwise the formula dries out quickly — and the technique does require some practice before you get a really sharp result.

Liquid eyeliner

Liquid eyeliner in felt-tip pen form is our favourite, and what we recommend for most people — especially beginners. It delivers the sharpest lines of all eyeliner types and is just as easy to use as a regular pen. Pop the cap off and draw — that's it. The version with a loose brush and a separate tube can be trickier to handle and tends to give a less precise result.

Kohl pencil

Kohl, or pencil eyeliner, is the softest and most forgiving of the three. It's perfect for a natural line along the lash line or for a dramatic smokey eye where you smudge the line with a finger or brush. That said, it doesn't offer the precision needed for sharp winged liner and needs sharpening regularly for the best result.

Whichever you choose, practice is key. And remember to remove your eyeliner properly every evening with our Caring Eyes Make Up Remover to protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
