Brow school: How to pluck your brows at home

Anna-Sara Nilsson

Pluck your eyebrows at home and get a perfect shape in no time without having to spend money and time on salon visits? Yes please! Xlash Cosmetics eyebrow experts tell you how — step by step.

Before you pluck your brows

You need:

A pair of tweezers

A mirror

An eyebrow pencil

Trim the brows if necessary

If you have bushy brows and/or long hairs, you can start by trimming your brows with scissors. To do this, brush the eyebrows downwards using an eyebrow brush, a clean mascara brush or an eyebrow gel. Carefully take a pair of scissors and cut the hairs that are outside of the shape. Then you see what you have to work with!

Plucking your brows step-by-step

Step 1: Find your starting point

Turn your tweezers upside down or use a pencil. Place it against one of your nose wings, straight up. This is a good starting point for your brow. Draw a slight line upwards with an eyebrow pencil or eyeliner to remember the marking. Repeat on the other side.

You do this to avoid too dense or sparse eyebrows.

Step 2: Pluck between the brows

Pluck the hairs that are between your markings. The hairs here are very thin and can be difficult to get hold of, so use a precise pair of tweezers to make it easier — such as an Xbrow Tweezer.

Step 3: Find your end point

Now it's time to figure out where your brow should end! To do this, use the tweezers or the pen again. Place it against your nose wing and point diagonally upwards (if you use tweezers, point the sharp part downwards towards your nose). Your tool should be angled so that one end lies against the outer corner of the eye. Make a new marking.

Step 4: Pluck so that you get the right length for your brows

Pluck the hairs that are behind the mark.

This makes your eyebrows look neither too long nor too short.

Step 5: Find the highest point of the brow

The arch is where your eyebrow should be at its highest. You can find it by looking straight into the mirror and angling the pen from the nose wing and over your pupil. Make a small dot. You can pluck a few extra hairs here if you want, for the illusion of a higher brow.

Step 6: Decide how thick your eyebrows should be

Between the starting point and the highest point of the brow, you can now pluck hairs from below to decide how thick you want your brows to be. You can mark with a pencil and gently pick one hair at a time to find your look.

Remember! Pluck too little rather than too much the first few times and never pluck from the top of the brow as a beginner.

Step 7: Shape the end of the brow

The part between the highest point and the end of the eyebrows can be thinned out if you want a sharp look for your eyebrow. Pluck one hair at a time, it easily gets too thin here!

If you want to pluck your eyebrows without it hurting

If you want it to hurt less to pluck your eyebrows there are a few tricks you can try.

  1. Have a hot shower before and pluck the eyebrows in the bathroom. The heat and steam cause the pores to open.

  2. You can also place an ice cube on the area you are going to pluck just before numbing it.

  3. Pick in the direction the hairs grow.

  4. Use high-quality tweezers that immediately catch all hairs.

Remember that the most important thing is that you are comfortable with your eyebrows and that these are recommendations to start from! There is no right or wrong as long as you are happy.
