Did you know that one in three people will get cancer and that 8,000 Swedish women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year? That's way too many, we think at Xlash! That's why this year we've chosen to support the Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon campaign, to support research so that more women can stay healthy. This is a heartfelt issue for us – at Xlash, we believe it's not only important to feel confident about your appearance. To honor the Pink Ribbon campaign a little extra, we share tips on how to best boost your inner well-being while also preventing cancer.
We believe every woman deserves to find her own style and own it – simply feeling confident in her unique beauty. But a big part of that is also feeling good on the inside. That's why we didn't hesitate in our decision to become a proud sponsor of this year's Pink Ribbon campaign.
"We are very happy to be part of making a difference. It feels great to support such an important campaign as the Pink Ribbon," says Ivan Pereira at Xlash.
Pink Ribbon – an international symbol for the fight against breast cancer
Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women? In the US, thousands receive the diagnosis every year. But the chances of recovery and, above all, survival are getting better. Much thanks to advances in research, but also because more cases are detected early and treatment methods have improved. In the 1980s, only six out of ten women survived; today, eight out of ten women do.
October is International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month when people worldwide raise awareness and funds to fight the disease. The Pink Ribbon originated in the USA and was first used in 1991 by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. During a charity run, they handed out pink ribbons to participants in New York.
But it's thanks to Evelyn Lauder, known from the beauty brand Estée Lauder, that the Pink Ribbon became the international symbol for the fight against breast cancer that it is today. By distributing the ribbon at their makeup counters, the brand made a big impact. First in the USA and then the rest of the world.
Why you should buy the Pink Ribbon this year
By purchasing the Pink Ribbon, you not only support a vital cause and fight. You also contribute to research making even greater strides, spreading cancer awareness to more people, and you can even influence decision-makers. But you also become part of a powerful community where people worldwide are engaged in the fight against breast cancer.
Pink Ribbon – available in two different designs
In the US, you can buy the Pink Ribbon every year. Xlash sponsors the Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon, which this year has been designed by Ben Gorham, founder of the fragrance house Byredo.
"I am proud to contribute to the Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon campaign, a campaign that has personally affected me. For me, hope is important and to remind of the ribbon's nature that binds us together and allows us to look forward. I wear the ribbon for my father-in-law and all other relatives and affected," says Ben Gorham in a press release from the Cancer Foundation.
Ben Gorham chose to design this year's ribbon as a round rope patterned in two shades of pink with silver thread that lights up in the autumn darkness. The resemblance to a rope is no coincidence; he got the idea when he started climbing.
One in three will get cancer, but many more are affected. Ben Gorham is one of them: his father was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, and his father-in-law passed away from cancer last year.
"One of my missions with the Pink Ribbon was to create something relevant for young people and get them to think not only about the disease but about life. About what a quality life is. How we want to live and how we get sick go hand in hand," says Ben Gorham.
What are you waiting for? Head to your nearest store and buy this year's Pink Ribbon. By doing so, you contribute to research so that more people survive!
How to boost your inner well-being and prevent cancer
Did you know that at least one-third of all cancer can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices? Below are some tips on how to boost your inner well-being while also preventing cancer. It should be noted that healthy lifestyle choices do not completely eliminate the risk of getting cancer. Even with healthy eating habits and regular exercise, one can still be affected.
Exercise at least 2.5 hours a week
Researchers have found that regular physical activity reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. The Cancer Foundation recommends exercising or being active for at least 2.5 hours a week. The type of exercise is less important, but the physical activity should increase your heart rate. This helps the heart work, which helps the body repair itself and increase cell renewal. When you move more, the body can also better handle inflammations, which can otherwise contribute to cancer development.
Become a pro at checking your breasts
Breast cancer is easier to detect early if you know your breasts better. Therefore, we want to emphasize the importance of regularly examining your breasts. Check out the Cancer Foundation's breast school for informative facts and how to best examine your breasts. They also provide information about breast cancer that you may not have known before.
Quit smoking once and for all
Do you smoke? There is hardly anything positive about smoking, so if you want to live a long, healthy life, we think you should quit smoking immediately. It significantly increases the risk of various types of cancer, from lung cancer to cervical cancer. Did you know that in the US, thousands die each year from cancer caused by smoking?
Ensure healthy eating habits
According to the Cancer Foundation, you have a lower risk of developing cancer if you live healthily compared to those with unhealthy lifestyle choices. If you want to reduce the risk of cancer, it is recommended to eat a varied diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. You should also limit the intake of calorie-rich foods high in fat and/or sugar, such as candy, fast food, pastries, soda, and juice. It is recommended to either abstain from alcohol or drink in moderation. Do you like meat? Make sure you eat a maximum of 18 ounces of red meat per week. Processed meats should be avoided entirely.
