7 reasons why you get dark circles under the eyes

Is there anything worse than large, prominent dark circles and bags under the eyes? We can barely imagine anything more annoying, especially since it makes you look so much more tired! Read on to find out 7 reasons why you get dark circles and bags under the eyes. We also reveal our best solution to the problem!

1. Poor, too much, or too little sleep

Prioritizing good sleep has several benefits. It's no coincidence that you call it beauty sleep! Researchers believe that a regular sleep of about 7-8 hours, among other things, prolongs life, gives a healthier brain, makes you more productive, gives a better immune system, and improves the mood. In addition, you can experience that you get healthier and better skin. If — on the other hand — you suffer from lack of sleep, too much or too poor sleep, dark circles and bags under the eyes can easily occur. If you don't get your beauty sleep, the skin can become paler, and dark blood vessels under the eyes can be seen more clearly. Lack of sleep can also lead to fluid accumulating under the eyes, which can cause bags — and might also be a reason for dark circles since bags can create shadows that then look like dark circles.

If you already easily get dark circles and bags under the eyes, they can become even clearer if you sleep poorly.

Therefore, always try to get enough sleep — to feel good overall, but also to avoid dark circles and bags under the eyes. However, it's not just lack of sleep that affects these things. There can be several other causes for dark circles.

2. How you sleep might also make it worse

Did you know that the position you sleep in might affect the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes? If you sleep on your stomach or on your side you may be pressing your face into the pillow, which puts strain on the skin around the eyes. Try instead to sleep on your back since this can counteract early signs of aging. If the bags under your eyes are extremely visible you could also sleep with an extra pillow, which makes your head rest higher and prevents fluid from accumulating under the eyes.

3. You rub your eyes too much

We all have itchy and irritated eyes from time to time. It can be due to allergies, dry eyes, eczema or reaction to makeup. Because the skin around the eyes is much thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the body, it's important not to give in and rub or scratch. Did you know that the skin under the eyes is only 0.5 mm thin? The skin on other parts of the body is about 2 mm thick. Therefore, if you scratch a lot around the eyes, it can increase swelling, lead to inflammation and ruptured blood vessels. This can make dark circles around the eyes more prominent.

If you have difficulty not rubbing your eyes, we recommend that you go to the nearest pharmacy and ask for a cream or eye drops that can offer some relief. You can also put cold slices of cucumber on your eyes to treat them with extra moisture. However, if you suffer from eczema, we recommend that you see a doctor to get the right treatment.

4. You don't protect your eyes from the sun

Your dark circles under the eyes may also be due to pigmentation that may have been caused by sunlight and UV radiation. As we mentioned earlier, the skin here is much more sensitive and a tan around the eyes can lead to both the formation of crow's feet and that dark circles are more clearly visible. To prevent you from developing dark circles due to pigmentation, we recommend that you invest in a pair of sunglasses that have 100% protection against UV radiation. It is also important that the sunglasses cover the entire eyes and preferably the skin underneath so that the radiation cannot penetrate.

5. Age might matter

The older you get, the thinner the skin under the eyes becomes. This is because you lose healthy fats and collagen needed to maintain skin elasticity. As a result, the blood vessels under the eyes become more prominent, which both worsen and cause dark circles under the eyes.

6. It may be due to your genes or bone structure

Unfortunately, some people are more likely than others to have dark circles and bags under their eyes. It may be because you have inherited it from your parents — that you have simply had bad luck in the gene pool! Your parents may have passed on thin, delicate and transparent skin under your eyes. All this makes the blood vessels under the eyes more visible, which creates an effect of dark circles and bags under the eyes. Sensitivity to certain diseases, such as hypothyroidism, might also affect.

In addition, one's face shape and bone structure can make dark circles more prominent. The area under the eye (so-called tear trough) may naturally be deep, which makes the area appear darker.

7. You are getting too much salt or caffeine

What you eat affects both your general mood, glow and bags under the eyes. A diet with a high salt content means that the body binds more water, which creates the impression of bags under the eyes. The opposite, ie lack of fluid, can have a similar effect. Balance is best. Caffeine has a similar effect, so it may be helpful to reduce the number of cups of coffee you drink each day. However, we understand that it can be difficult for those who can not be without their morning coffee.
