Hydration – The Key to Everything
When you step outside, you're met with freezing temperatures and a whipping snowfall. What should you do to keep your makeup looking good in the winter—without ending up looking like a dry, patchy raccoon?
Simple: boost your lashes and skin with hydration and use a nourishing waterproof mascara!
1: Hydrated Skin Makes Your Makeup Last Longer
The key to a perfect makeup result that holds up despite freezing temperatures and snowstorms is a good, hydrated base.
When choosing a moisturizing product, it's beneficial if it contains hyaluronic acid—a gel-like molecule that's incredibly hydrating and binds water, contributing to increased moisture balance and firmer skin.
Product recommendations include our Rejuvenating Eye Gels and our moisturizing sheet masks, like the Hydro Gel Mask.
Use these regularly during the winter. To give your skin extra nourishment, you can replace your regular night cream with such a mask a few times a week.
For your skin to absorb the extra moisture, it's important to start by exfoliating away dead skin cells. Gently exfoliate your face with a facial scrub once a week and massage in a moisturizing cream while your skin is still damp.
2: Choose Makeup That Hydrates
During the winter, your skin will benefit from using makeup products that provide nourishment and moisture, and try to skip the powder—which can worsen already dry skin.
Instead, use a liquid foundation or a CC cream that provides good coverage while also offering plenty of nourishment and moisture.
Also, switch your highlighter to a liquid form and your primer to one that provides plenty of moisture and radiance to create a beautiful winter base.
3: Don't Forget the Eye Area
The skin around the eyes is extra sensitive because the tissue here is thinner than in other parts of the body. This means a lack of protective fats, making the skin more vulnerable to damage caused by weather and wind.
In winter, it's especially important to care for the eye area. Invest in a good eye cream that contains nutrient-rich oils and active ingredients. They are specifically formulated for the thin skin around the eyes and can help with dryness, dark circles, and fine lines under the eyes. We recommend combining our Wake Me Up Eye Serum with our Instant Hydration cream.
4: Use an Eyelash Serum!
Snowstorms or cold weather can cause mascara to flake or smudge under the eyes. If you're tired of this, we recommend building up your lashes with an eyelash serum instead. Once you've achieved the desired result, you can enjoy the luxury of not needing mascara, which can definitely make it easier to get through the winter chill!
A favorite of ours is Xlash Eyelash Serum, a safe product that is dermatologically and allergy-tested, not tested on animals, and contains only natural ingredients.
The serum is like a cocktail of nutrients for the lashes, making them healthier and more resilient. It contains vitamins, minerals, and proteins that both extend the growth cycle of each lash and speed up the growth rate.
It is formulated with hyaluronic acid, which binds moisture, and red coral extract, which promotes cell renewal—both important ingredients in the process of achieving longer lashes. If you use the serum regularly, you can expect results after just four weeks of use.
5: Use a Nourishing Waterproof Mascara
Just like your skin, your eyelashes need a break from makeup and time to recover. Overuse of mascara can dry out lashes and make them weaker. Also, remember to remove your mascara before going to bed!
When you do use mascara, make sure to choose one that provides nourishment. We like Xlash Mascara, which contains Vitamin A to stimulate hair follicle growth, beeswax for gentle hydration, and Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps renew damaged hair follicles.
An eyelash curler can open up your eyes and make them appear larger, but using it incorrectly can damage your lashes. Avoid curling your lashes after applying mascara.
Once lashes are coated with mascara, they become harder and less flexible. This increases the risk of them breaking if you curl them with mascara on. There's also a risk that the eyelash curler will stick to the mascara and pull out a lash—something incredibly painful that you definitely want to avoid!
6: Prep Your Eyelids Before Applying Eyeshadow or Eyeliner
To prevent your eye makeup from being ruined by harsh winds and snowstorms, prep your eyelids by applying concealer, then dip a makeup sponge in loose powder and dab it on.
This helps absorb excess oils that can otherwise cause your eye makeup to move throughout the day.
